Samsung Galaxy Watch 4 Classic vs Galaxy Watch Active 2 Comparison

Recently Samsung has launched their new line-up of Smartwatches known as the Samsung Galaxy Watch 4 Classic with a significant downgrade in price but with similar specifications as compared to the older version Samsung Galaxy Watch Active 2, Let’s have a detailed comparison between Samsung Galaxy Watch 4 Classic vs Galaxy Watch Active 2.

Samsung Galaxy Watch 4 Classic

Samsung Galaxy Watch 4 is finally upon us and with it, we’re getting our first look at the future of wear os as we’ve known for some time Samsung and Google have teamed up for the next generation of wearables and what we have here today are two of the first watches to use the new platform the galaxy watch 4 and Watch 4 Classic.

Google and Samsung announced that they had teamed up for the latest version of Wear OS many had hoped that it would bring about a smartwatch for android users that could finally rival the apple watch with a relatively robust third-party app library from Google and Samsung’s popular and intuitive system the platform promised to get even more useful and now the galaxy watch 4 and Watch 4 Classic are the first devices to run the new Wear OS powered by Samsung.

The new Samsung devices that have been announced on the 11th of august so this is the last part of that saga of review which is the Samsung galaxy watch 4 Classic.

So a bit of introduction to the whole galaxy watches 4 series of smartwatches because we have both the Samsung galaxy watch 4 without the classic name and that is technically the replacement for the active series of smartwatches.

And then we have the Samsung Galaxy Watch 4 Classic it is the classical design with the rotary bezel so here you go and both the Samsung galaxy watch 4 and watch 4 classic also comes in two different sizes each.

The two buttons on the side of the watch but have changed in shape they are now oblong instead of circular in shape and now the home key also has a red ring around.

One thing that picked my interest the most is actually the watch strap itself so this watch strap is kind of oddly designed and when I looked at the picture of it it kind of struck me as odd because how Samsung designed this band is to protrude it inwards to the point where it literally tugs against the watch body I didn’t think of it much and when I wore it on my wrist it’s even weirder.

Because it left two huge gaps on the side of the watch but then I realized the genius of this design when I wanted to adjust the galaxy watch for classic on my wrist I realize the strap is designed to convert the watch to become a spring-like structure.

So by tugging the watch strap against the watch body itself it pushes down the entire watch to my wrist but without the excessive over-tightening of the watch strap to get good contact with the body.

But there’s a quality of life improvement that I think is really worth mentioning and sorry if I sound a bit like mini physics there hope I didn’t bore you anyway the strap that we got here is the ridge sports band it’s surprisingly comfortable and combined with a spring-like structure my wrist gets enough air to breathe and it is also easily adjustable by pressing on both sides.

Samsung Galaxy Watch 4 and the Watch 4 Classic are two very similar devices with the key differences between them being the fact that the classic has a physical rotating bezel and a stainless steel case as opposed to just a touch-sensitive one on the regular.

The watch 4 is similar with some notable changes swipe left for your notifications and write for your widgets which are now called tiles of course you can also use the digital bezel to scroll right or left.

there are two buttons home on top and back on the bottom long-pressing the back button launches Samsung pay long-pressing the home button launches Bixby google assistant

A big part of wear os is supposed to be coming at a later time but in the meanwhile, it’s the Bixby show how do you say thank you in Japanese remind me to do laundry and pick up detergent at 5 pm.

You can map the long press to open the power menu instead I will give Samsung credit though you can tell they’ve been working on Bixby it’s still no google assistant but the improvements might just surprise you.

you can also map a double press of the home button to open one of your favorite apps for me it’s the timer so I’m coming from the galaxy watch 3 first thing I notice is that the watch 4 runs slightly smoother than the 3.

But software isn’t their only intriguing new feature Samsung also upgraded the biometric sensor to offer among other things body composition measurement and improved sleep tracking throw in new 5nm processors and sharper screens.

Easy & Fast installation of apps that are already on your phone onto your watch is one of the features that Samsung said it’s one UI software would enable I was expecting them to just automatically show up without any work on my part but I still had to go into the play store and look for this section to install them one by one.

The watch 4 series also got a serious hardware upgrade Samsung used a new three-in-one biometric sensor that not only should allow for faster and more consistent readings.

If you previously own a galaxy watch and have invested in apps or have built a large collection of third-party watch faces from the galaxy app store, yeah you’re gonna lose access to all of that if you upgrade to the watch for the stock watch faces are great though and honestly, I think most people will find something they like on the bright side.

The benefits of wear os are that you gain access to google apps like google fits google keep google pay android messages and google maps native google maps is so darn awesome.

Just start navigating on your phone and bam turn by turn directions will automatically pop up on your watch android messages is also really nice to have for those of you not pairing this to a Samsung phone or any other Android device.

You’re getting a wider selection of useful watch apps which addresses one of the biggest knots on galaxy watches having wear os also streamlines the whole app installation experience as everything goes through the google play store.

There’s also a couple of gestures to improve the hands-free experience you shake twice to answer a call and rotate twice to decline one.

What about responding to text messages there are several ways you can do this but of course, speech to text will be the fastest.

You also have other sensors for measuring health metrics like ECG, blood pressure, blood oxygen and knew with the watch for body composition.

I’ve been excited about this new feature since body composition is generally a better way to understand your overall health than pure BMI I’d been using amazon’s camera-based system in its halo app to determine my body fat percentage and thought that’s been a handy and seemingly accurate method.

Samsung watch the galaxy watch 4 tweaks the design slightly the software feels smoother and Bixby is faster but I’m keeping my fingers crossed for the google assistant switching to wear os definitely makes the galaxy watch more capable and will appeal to more people.

Samsung Galaxy Watch Active 2

the reason I choose the Samsung Galaxy Watch Active 2 above others is well there are a couple of reasons first being the fact that I use a Samsung smartphone and that really helps with the Samsung ecosystem and all next it also looks way better than the honor magic watch 2 which is a little too sporty.

The Galaxy Watch Active 2 on the other hand is really light and has a comfortable synthetic rubber strap besides ease of using the strap is durable too.

Getting to the back of the watch you can see the heart rate monitor while the right frame houses a back and a home button you also get narrow bezels to pack in a larger display in a smaller form factor.

The most important upgrade of them all here has to be the Gorilla Glass DX+ certification for the display if you recall the original Samsung Galaxy Watch Active had the Gorilla Glass 3 protection which was not very durable.

Here the DX+ from corning has scratch resistance and anti-reflective properties as a result the watch active 2 has managed to overcome some nasty collisions without any significant scratch.

Samsung Galaxy Watch Active 2 has a circular 1.4 inches AMOLED display is equally amazing the 360 x 360-pixel density has remained the same from the original watch active though the panel itself is still just as vibrant brightness has been of no concern as the watch active 2 gets plenty bright.

Even when I’m outdoors it is sufficiently sharp to the eyes and has an excellent contrast ratio too in a typical AMOLED fashion the blacks are deep the whites are bright and the viewing angles is just great.

It also retains the always-on display feature if you’re into that but in my case, I turned it off because it takes a significant toll on the battery, and raising the wrist to wake the screen just works fine.

Navigating around the screen is easy and the touch response is fluid as well the thin bezels around the edge of the screen are actually touch-sensitive and mimic the physical rotating.

Apart from using the dial you can also swipe or scroll through the display to navigate through the watch.

Performance on the galaxy watch active 2 has been satisfactory, to say the least, and running the whole show here is once again Samsung’s proprietary Tizen variable OS 4.0 the user interface feels very well designed snappy and I noticeably felt it got better with a few updates.

Also, there are plenty of Samsung apps on the galaxy store which may be enough to sum but still google square os and apple’s watch os are streets ahead when it comes to app choices.

Samsung finally provided a menstrual cycle tracking feature in its health app a while ago here is the galaxy watch active 2.

Samsung Galaxy Watch 4 Classic vs Active

Also comes with a dedicated ECG sensor which can record electrical activities of your heart and then check for different heart conditions using this you’ll be able to get a better reading of blood pressure compared to optical sensors found in common smartwatches.

Let’s talk about battery life the 44 mm version that I have with me comes with a bigger 340 milliamp-hour cell and during my usage, it lasted me somewhere between 3 to 3.5 days with the power-saving feature turned ON.

If you are a Samsung user the Samsung Galaxy Watch Active 2 is definitely something you should check out.
